STEP INTO MUSKOKA ELEGANCE: A STAY AT SHERWOOD INN

Come visit a resort that offers the best of both worlds: timeless Muskoka character with a touch of contemporary grace.

By Sue Bartholomew

The minute you step out of the car and onto the grounds of the Sherwood Inn, you arrive in a fragrant forest; you’re instantly enveloped by the rich, grounding aromas of sweetgrass, pine, maple, cedar, and soft florals. Nature offers its own warm welcome.

This earthy elegance is perfectly complemented by the traditional charm of early Muskoka architecture, where handcrafted heritage lends understated refinement. At Sherwood Inn, you truly experience the best of both worlds: timeless Muskoka character with a welcoming contemporary grace set on a shore of Lake Joseph, one of Muskoka’s “Big Three” lakes. It’s luxury in perfect harmony with nature.

The story of Sherwood Inn began in 1939, when Harry Draper, a 45-year-old lawyer and prominent member of Toronto’s upper society, envisioned a retreat of distinction and charm. Draper’s goal was to create an inn of exceptional quality, inspired by the elegant Gold Coast of a prosperous New England estate.

Dreams of luxury, the Drapers delivered something far more personal — a place where guests would feel not like strangers at hotel, but like friends welcomed to a cherished cottage. Since 2012, ClubLink has managed the Inn, continuing to uphold that spirit of warmth and community, instilling new comforts as the Sherwood Inn experience today.

Just as it was in the 1940s, a stay at Sherwood Inn is leisurely and relaxed, yet comfortably refined. Time seems to slow down here. A typical day might include quiet morning walks along tree-lined nature trails, a refreshing afternoon swim in the clear lake waters, or simply basking on the sandy beach with a good book. Before sunset, after a swim or golf at nearby clubs, the newly finished cottages, perfectly positioned for prime lake views with fireplaces, invite you to linger. Each of the 49 rooms at Sherwood Inn reflects Muskoka’s timeless, boutique ambiance. Indoors or out, the balance of casual comforts and refined luxury, dock and peaceful settings make it a favourite for continuing experiences and family retreats.

Culinary excellence is a hallmark of the Sherwood Inn, thanks to Chef Jesse, who has elevated the Inn’s already renowned dining experience. Vintages Restaurant, known for its locally inspired upscale cuisine and impressive wine list, has become a true culinary destination in Muskoka. Seasonal, locally sourced ingredients are at the heart of every dish.

A highlight of my evening during our stay was the Georgian Bay pickerel, expertly pan-seared with a provincial flair, served with foraged lemon rice and a vibrant fennel tomato slaw that added brightness and colour to the plate. My guest opted for the visually stunning vegetable medley: beets, butternut squash and pepper, filled with golden pan-fried tofu, drizzled with a silky vegan cashew cream sauce. Together with crisp green oak mixed greens and fresh garden herbs, Chef Jesse brought the dish together with perfect balance and flair.

A new addition to the property is Within Spa, owned by Jackie Gronfors. This thoughtfully curated wellness space offers an array of treatments, including a Customized Specialty Tremella Within Facial using exclusively Dermalogica products. I indulged in the Happy Sole Foot Ritual — the ideal way to unwind after a scenic walk along the manicured forest trails. Guests are invited to explore both lakeside paths and tranquil forested areas, surrounded by towering pines and the calming hush of nature.

Unlike many family-focused resorts, Sherwood Inn is tailored to couples and adults, making it a top choice for honeymoons, anniversaries, and serene escapes. It’s also a favoured venue for weddings and private retreats, thanks to its picturesque setting and high-end amenities.

Our next chapter at Sherwood Inn will be a winter visit, an experience said to be postcard-perfect. Cozy fireside moments, snowy trails, and the magic of Muskoka under a blanket of snow are all part of the Inn’s year-round appeal.

While Muskoka is famed for its summer and fall splendour, Sherwood Inn remains open throughout the winter. Offering cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and the full charm of a winter wonderland.

Sherwood Inn blends historic elegance, lakefront luxury, and shout-out hospitality like few. Built almost 85 years ago, it remains Muskoka’s iconic landmark. It continues to be beloved by those seeking a quiet, romantic, and timeless Muskoka experience.

See you in December!
